The concert’s visual system, played live by the bass player
“Provo a convincermi” is Andrea Montis’ debut album, performed live in concert with 5 musicians on stage and a fully customised video staging.
Andrea is one of my best friends: he asked me, and honoured me, to play bass at the live events and also to create the visuals for the show.
I designed a series of visuals that I can play live while playing bass… not easy, but very challenging and fun!
Each of the 10 songs is animated by a graphic theme generated and controlled live on stage by the bass player (Simone Murtas), following the dynamics and mood of each part of the song.
In its latest version the system can also design lighting scenes and movements for each song and play them in sync with the video over the DMX protocol.
All the graphics are designed to “assist” the music, following and emphasising its message. I took a minimal approach so that the video does not steal the attention, letting people perceive musical changes through the video too, in a kind of subliminal way.
Each song has a “base” graphic idea, drawn from the meaning of the song, which changes following the movements and mood of the song (intro, chorus, bridge and so on).
All scenes are generated and driven in real time, with no pre-recorded video. The footswitch changes scenes and single movements, so each part can be synchronised live.
Between scenes there is also an animation: the CD cover is sliced and layered to give dynamics to the scene. At each introduction the song’s title appears at the right moment, driven by the footswitch.
